HILLIS CALLS FOR THOROUGH INVESTIGATION INTO BEACH POLLUTION

UUP representative Norman Hillis has called or a thorough investigation into the cause of sewage debris that contaminated Portstewart Beach just days before a prestigious European Blue Flag was raised at the popular strand. Calling for the responsible party to be prosecuted, the Councillor said the incident was a disgrace, causing embarrassment to environment officials. Councillor Hillis said: “This incident left sewage on the beach and I am alarmed that this should happen at any time let alone when we are supposed to be celebrating a prestigious, international award which acts as a guarantee to tourists that a beach or marina they are visiting is one of the best in the world. “It is awarded to coastal destinations which have achieved the highest quality in water, facilities, safety, environmental education and management. “After all the good work put in by the National Trust, Coleraine Borough Council and with a new multi-million pound water treatment works fully operational and working well, here we are with sewage debris on one of our prized beaches in the height of the summer season. “This is just not acceptable and the source of this discharge must be identified and those responsible fined. “We are working exceptionally hard in many areas to improve our environment, particularly around the seashore and along our waterways. “This type of incident cannot go unpunished,” said Cllr. Hillis.
